Occupational Therapist (Program Coordinator)

The Occupational Therapist at this level can make autonomous clinical decisions in a clinical and administrative environment. This Occupational Therapy advanced clinical role includes coordinating/supervising highly specialized Occupational Therapy evaluation and treatment, prescribing and training on assistive technology devices and durable medical equipment, unique to this coordinator/supervisor program. H/she focuses primarily on those individuals whose actual or potential impairment is related to:
the neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular pulmonary, neurological, psychiatric systems; on methods to evaluate the functions of these systems; and on the selection and application of appropriate therapeutic procedures to maintain, improve, or restore functional abilities. Duties include but not limited to:
Reviews all PM&RS Little Rock Division Inpatient and Outpatient consults to determine appropriateness of physical and occupational therapy orders. Contacts referring providers for further clarification of orders as necessary and educates referring providers on services provided by PMRS. Follows all applicable scheduling directives for receiving consults Reviews all PM&RS Little Rock Division Inpatient and Outpatient consults to correctly triage patients for timely physician, physical therapy and/or occupational therapy intervention to ensure maximal functional outcomes. Determines department priorities in conjunction with the Program Director, assigns work, and ensures that established productivity is maintained across multiple disciplines including physical therapy, chiropractic, nursing, occupational therapy, rehabilitation therapy assistants, and medical support assistants. Under the direction of the Program Director, monitors scheduling practices for physician, APN, chiropractor, RN, physical therapy, and occupational therapy clinics to ensure that patients are scheduled in a timely manner based on acuity to promote the highest possible functional outcome. Maintains scheduling access by completing all required classes and is knowledgeable of all scheduling directives and mandates to ensure compliance in scheduling procedures. Independently solves complex treatment problems related to occupational therapy, using advanced knowledge to adapt and modify treatment plans, activities, and procedures to meet the needs of the patients across multiple areas of practice. Evaluates patients with simple and complex diagnoses to identify specific occupational therapy treatment problems. Using a wide range of knowledge across multiple areas of physical therapy, the incumbent develops a specific occupational therapy treatment plan for each patient utilizing evidenced based practice. Performs and interprets results of tests and measurements of the patient's condition for use in preparing the treatment plan, modifying treatment, and evaluating results of treatment. Tests are frequently unusual or complex and must be adapted because of the patient's multiple physical disabilities, psychiatric disabilities or present medical condition Establishes short-term and long-term occupational therapy patient treatment goals that are objective, measurable, functional, and time limited in collaboration with the patient and significant other/caregivers. Implements treatment programs with great autonomy to meet the occupational therapy treatment goals. Demonstrates the ability to implement, revise and/or update evidence based occupational therapy services across many areas of occupational therapy. Maintains effective communication with patients, families and other health care professionals to enhance patient care. Participates in department meetings on the Annual Business Plan and makes recommendations for additions of equipment and physical and occupational therapy treatment programs. Supervises and guides non-professional assistants/aides involved in occupational therapy treatment to maintain overall responsibility of treatment. Maintains personal productivity and manages effective use of time/schedules for occupational therapy. Demonstrates cost containment and efficiency in all aspects of the position. Develops and initiates cost containment strategies as requested. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule:

Citizenship. Candidates must be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education and/or experience. The individual must meet at least one of the requirements below:
(1) Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy AND two (2) years of experience as an occupational therapist. (2) Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy AND two (2) years of graduate education in a related field; (3) Master's Degree or higher in occupational therapy. Certification. Candidates must possess a current NBCOT certification as an OT. State Licensure. Individuals hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Experience:
Is currently an OT or PT with sustained exemplary performance, conduct, attendance and productivity and 5 years experience as OT. Understands the unique elements of the ARU practice, including the levels of care delivery in the ICUs, step down and inpatient units, as well as the specialty care of Hand Rehab, PAVE, Geriatric acute care, IPC and Chiro collaboration, and urgent post op care of all surgical specialties Recognizes the 365-day weekend and holiday care delivery needs unique to the program, including the planning of weekend patient care safe handoff, and the decision making for weekend and holiday prioritization and emergent coverage needs. Demonstrated high levels of and the ability to communicate ideas and new processes to peers and co-workers Understands and describes current processes and advanced skills and knowledge they utilized that will be needed coordinate clinic activities, plan, administrate, supervise, develop policy and procedure and monitor clinic activities to ensure compliance with required standards. These include standards from The Joint Commission, CARF, and other acute facility regulatory agencies such as IG, National, and VISN oversight agencies. Understands and is successful at own productivity and can describe processes to-determine department priorities in conjunction with the Program Director, assign work, and ensure that established productivity is maintained across multiple disciplines including physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Grade Determinations:
GS-13 Occupational Therapist (Program Coordinator) Experience. Completion of one year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level and directly related to the position being filled. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, one year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate all the following KSAs. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all the following KSAs:
a. Knowledge of contemporary occupational therapy within specialty area to provide clinical guidance, training, or education for internal and external stakeholders. b. Ability to set priorities, delegate tasks, meet multiple deadlines, and balance responsibilities. c. Ability to articulate and communicate the assignment, project, problem to be solved, actionable events, and objectives; as well as provide direction on work methods, practices and procedures in administration and/or education methodologies. d. Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work, evaluate the program to ensure that methods, deadlines and quality have been met, and ensure adjustments to the work process are in accordance with priorities. e. Ability to develop and coordinate treatment and/or educational programs within a concentrated field or specialty area, such as amputee, spinal cord injury, chronic pain, student clinical education/residency programming, polytrauma/traumatic or brain injury. f. Ability to effectively motivate and manage a diverse clinical staff with widely divergent backgrounds, interests, and points of view. References:
