Major Duties will consist of but not limited to:
Design, measure, fit and adapt lenses and frames for clients according to written optical prescription or specification Assist client with selecting frames Measure customer for size of eyeglasses and coordinate frames with facial philological requirements, eye measurements and optical prescription Prepare work order for optical laboratory containing instructions for grinding and mounting lenses in frames Adjust frame and lens position to fit client Make repairs or replace damaged, broken or lost spectacles Educate customers about eyewear, bifocals/multifocals Measure clients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using measuring devices Assist clients in selecting frames according to style and color and ensure that frames are coordinated with facial and eye measurements and optical prescriptions Prepare work orders and instructions for grinding lenses and fabricating eyeglasses Maintain records of customer prescriptions, work orders, and payments Perform administrative duties such as tracking inventory and sales, submitting patient insurance information, and performing simple bookkeeping Sell goods such as spectacles upgrades, sunglasses, and other goods related to eyes in general Heat, shape, or bend plastic or metal frames in order to adjust eyeglasses to fit clients, using pliers and hands. Evaluate prescriptions in conjunction with clients' vocational and avocational visual requirements Work Schedule:

Incumbent would need to be able to stand and walk around freely for at least an hour to assist veterans daily. Hearing Aids are permitted. It may involve some sitting, walking and standing for short periods or carrying light instruments and supplies. The position is required to lift and carry 10-15 pounds as needed on infrequent basis. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06 grade level:
One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:
knowledge of the basic instruments and diagnostic or treatment procedures commonly used in the specialization; Ability to position patients for examination or treatment and knowledge of usual alternate positions for patients with common physical disabilities; Knowledge of sterilization methods to clean instruments; Knowledge of opticianry services; Design, measure, fit and adapt lenses and frames; Prepare work order for optical laboratory; Knowledge of basic anatomy; Certified or Licensed Optician. This experience must be supported by your resume to be creditable. OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute graduate education for specialized experience to qualify. Applicant must have graduate education with courses related to this position (Health Technician (Optician)). Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. OR, Combination of Specialized Experience and Education:
Applicants may also combine specialized experience and education beyond a bachelor's degree to qualify for this grade and position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
